Coursework
All courses must be purchased through our online catalog, unless otherwise specified (links included below).
Foundation (required) Courses: Each underlined course title is hyperlinked to the online catalog so you can see the price and all details.
Online: Overview of the Nature and Treatment of Trauma (6 hours)
We strongly recommend that you take this course first.
Online: Self-Care in Trauma Work (7.5 hours)
Online: Trauma, PTSD & Traumatic Grief: Effective Assessments and Immediate Interventions (7.5 hours), Effective 3/31/17 replaces Evidence-based Methods for Trauma Treatment. Either course can be used for this requirement and if you took both, one course can count as elective hours. Email us if you have questions about this change. Note: This course does include NY approved social work contact hours.
Online: Trauma-Fueled Addiction: Stop the Suffering - End the Pain (6 hours) As of 8/21/17, this overview course replaces Trauma & Addiction: Integrating Research into Practice which has been transferred to the elective category. Anyone starting the certificate program prior to this date may use either course to fulfill this requirement.
Online: Trauma, Affect Dysregulation and Shame: Treating the Seeds of Self-Destructive Behaviors (6 hours) As of 3/2/17, this course replaces Trauma & Shame: The Unseen Wound which has been transferred to the elective category. Anyone starting the certificate program prior to this date may use either course to fulfill this requirement.
Elective Course Hours
Choose 6 hours of online elective courses in the online catalog category Online Trauma-Informed Clinical Foundation: Elective Courses or choose Buffalo, N.Y., elective, skill intervention, and grounding & experiential methods courses. Any of these course types fulfill elective hours in this certificate program.
Western New York trauma training offered by Annie Monaco, LCSW-R and her colleagues: Applicability of elective hours to this requirement will be specified in the brochures and marketing emails. Email us for the form with fee and instructions to apply these hours to our program.
Application of outside courses to the elective requirement: Select courses from other providers that are approved in advance may be used to fulfill our elective requirement. There is an additional $100 fee for this service. Courses that may be used to fulfill this requirement include:
Trauma-Focused CBT Course - free, web-based course. Email us for the form to submit this document along with your certificate of completion and the additional fee.
Cognitive Processing Therapy Course - free, web-based course. Email us for the form to submit this document along with your certificate of completion and the additional fee.
Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for Traumatized Children - free, web-based course. Email us for the form to submit this document along with your certificate of completion and the additional fee.
Check the UB MSW Credit Courses page for a current list of courses that count toward the online certificate program if taken within three years of the program start date. UB MSW Credit Courses can be used for up to a maximum of 12 hours.
Certificate of Completion
For those who finish the certificate program, please email us at sw-ce@buffalo.edu and include your current mailing address. We will mail you a frameable certificate of completion.
