Description

This is a 2-year certification course of the American Heart Association (AHA). It includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults, children and infants, the use of automatic external defibrillation (AED), the use of bag-valve mask, choking and special resuscitation and cardiopulmonary emergencies. This course will train providers to respond to cardiac, respiratory and choking emergencies using basic life support skills and AED. Students receive the AHA – BLS for Health Care Providers Certification.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Preserve life - Recognize, and manage a person that presents with signs and symptoms of a life-threatening or potentially life-threatening nature until advance care arrives.
  2. Prevent further injury - Recognize safety concerns and effectively protect the patients of an emergency nature in clinical and field settings until advanced care arrives.
  3. Promote recovery – Provide life saving or injury protection actions, such as CPR, wound care, splinting, aid in administration of Epinephrine, inhalers, glucose and other emergency activities until advanced care arrives.

Doctor of Chiropractic and Emergency Medical Technician License


Dr. Melissa MacDonald is a graduate of Northwestern Health Sciences University where she earned her Doctor of Chiropractic and Emergency Medical Technician License. She then spent two years of specialty training in the Human Performance Center where she focused her research and clinical skills on specific testing and treatment protocols. She has been an American Heart Association Instructor since 2015 and is the current Training center coordinator for Northwestern Health Sciences University. Additionally, Dr. Mac served as the team Clinician for the Minnesota Vixen, a professional women’s football team that won the conference championship in 2018. She recently traveled to the World Championship of Rowing to provide care for the athletes in Sarasota, FL. Dr. Mac is the American Chiropractic Association Sport Council coordinator for the state of Wisconsin and is working on providing the highest level of care to athletic events.

Dr. Mac has achieved both international and national certification as a chiropractic sport provider. She is a faculty member at Northwestern Health Sciences University where she teaches Emergency Procedures. She is a speaker on sports chiropractic issues in the United States as well as abroad.
