Description

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the prevalence of concussion/mTBI in our current population.
  2. Describe the S/Sx of concussion/mTBI, from a classic perspective and from a current literature perspective.
  3. List etiology of concussion/mTBI and describe what happens in the coup-counter-coup action during a traumatic brain event. 
  4. Review brain anatomy and neuronal connections commonly damaged during a concussion/mTBI.
  5. Discuss the neuro-metabolic cascade of concussion/mTBI.
  6. Learn the importance of an in-depth neuro-orthopedic examination and appropriate diagnostic testing.
  7. Discuss possible interventions and rehabilitation models of concussion/mTBI.
  8. Educate practitioners on the importance of concussion/mTBI screenings and cognitive-based assessments.
  9. Understand the need for further research and rehabilitation models.

About the Presenter

Dr. Erik ReisDr. Erik Reis is a Chiropractic Physician and board-certified Chiropractic Neurologist at MFNC. He received his Doctorate in Chiropractic from Northwestern Health Sciences University, graduating with magna cum laude honors, and graduated from the University of Minnesota with his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology/Exercise Science with emphasis in human motor performance in both athletic and therapeutic settings. Dr. Reis currently holds a diplomate in neurology from the American Chiropractic Neurology Board and is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) with the Brain Injury Association of America. He has completed numerous hours of additional post-graduate coursework utilizing clinical applications and therapeutic interventions in neurological and nutritional rehabilitation of traumatic brain injuries, concussions, and vestibular disorders.
