Description
There is a need to streamline the process that offers prompt referral and immediate management of patients with VCFs who would benefit from vertebral augmentation procedure for pain relief, followed by treatment of osteoporosis with the goal of preventing another debilitating fracture.
Learning Objectives:
- To determine between acute/subacute vertebral compression fractures from chronic vertebral compression fractures using x-ray, MRI, CT and nuclear medicine bone scan
- To streamline prompt referral and management of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures and review treatment of osteoporosis to prevent another fracture
- To discuss imaging studies such as DEXA scan and CT to determine bone density to help diagnose osteoporosis
- To discuss how imaging studies such as x-ray, CT, MRI and nuclear medicine bone scan help distinguish between osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture from a pathologic fracture secondary to neoplastic process

Ramon deGuzman, MD is a board-certified neuroradiologist with Medical Scanning Consultants, PA. Dr. deGuzman provides professional physician services at Center for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI) in Minnesota. In addition to neuroradiology, Dr. deGuzman brings expertise in injection procedures to help patients manage joint and back pain.
Dr. deGuzman attended the University of Rochester Medical Center where he completed multiple fellowships in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology and ultrasound and CT fellowship at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in the Philippines. He completed radiology residencies at Cardinal Santos Medical Center and the 13th United States Air Force Medical Center in the Philippines, in addition to a pediatric residency at Saint Joseph Hospital/Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. deGuzman received his medical degree at De La Salle University and completed a medical internship at Medical City General Hospital, both in the Philippines.
